Indonesia aspires to become Southeast Asia's electric vehicle powerhouse

Indonesia is ready to become an export hub of electric vehicles in Southeast Asia. The first phase of producing 1,000 cars and buses next year, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita said Tuesday.
The production process of the electric vehicles will begin in March next year by the South Korean company PT Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Indonesia, whose factory is being built in the Cikarang industrial area east of capital Jakarta.

"The production of electric vehicles is a showcase that our industries are moving towards environmentally-friendly industries, besides sending a message to the international community that Indonesia is ready to become the main export hub of electric vehicles in ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations) and the surrounding areas in the region," Kartasasmita said in a statement.

The Southeast Asian country targets to produce 600,000 electric cars and buses by 2030, and the production is estimated to reduce 2.7 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
This is in line with Indonesia's target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 29 per cent by 2030.
In September, an electric vehicle battery industrial factory started construction in West Java with an investment of 1.1 billion U.S. dollars under the collaboration between Indonesia and South Korea. The factory will start operation in 2022.
