Ride to remember Bangkok-based cycle-tour company SpiceRoads is running a four-day Anzac Ride to Remembrance tour, to tie in with annual memorial events for fallen Allied servicemen that take place at Hellfire Pass and the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery, in Thailand. Riders will Kanchanaburi, where the 118km route begins.
Kanchanaburi is perhaps Thailand’s most famous WWII site, well known for its Bridge Over The River Kwai and the infamous Thai-Burma Railway, also known as the Death Railway. Prisoners of war were forced into hard labour to construct the railway under extremely harsh conditions and to commemorate the fallen, a national day of remembrance is set yearly on April 25 at Hellfire Pass as part of ANZAC day.
A dawn parade is held at Hellfire Pass followed by a wreath-laying ceremony in Kanchanaburi town at the at the Don Rak War Cemetery where 6,982 Allied POWs who perished during the construction of the railway are buried.
This bike tour will visit the famous WWII sites, participate in the ceremonies, and we see some places off the beaten path as we ride along amazing trails through the jungle, teak plantations and villages. We take a float down river on bamboo rafts, visit Lawa Cave to see stalactites and stalagmites in many unique formations and overnight at resorts on the banks of the famous River Kwai.
The full-board tour costs US$750 per rider, including bike hire.
