The first phase of Nusantara, Indonesia's new capital, will begin with the construction of 184 housing blocks, according to blueprints revealed by Indonesia. The new metropolis, which is being developed on the east coast of the island of Borneo to replace the present Indonesian capital Jakarta, will begin construction with the construction of dwellings.

The city will house the state palace, the house of representatives, government buildings, and housing for public servants. It was designed by the Indonesian firm URBAN+. A starting population of 500,000 people is planned for it.

Nusantara will be situated 870 miles from the current capital, on the Indonesian portion of Borneo, between North Penajam Paser and Kutai Kartanegara.

According to Reuters, Bambang Susantono, the president of the Nusantara National Capital Authority (NNCA), recently declared that the first phase of the capital's construction would start in the second quarter of this year.

He indicated that the apartment buildings would be constructed to house 14,500 government employees, members of the armed forces, and police in a speech at the World Economic Forum.

Susantono disclosed that the NNCA was in talks to complete the project with three private developers from China, South Korea, and Indonesia. The NNCA states that the state palace's development will also start this year and be finished in 2024.

Nusantara is a signature project of Indonesian president Joko Widodo, who aims to relocate the capital away from Jakarta on the island of Java. It was first mentioned in 2019.

With a population of about 10 million, Jakarta has experienced severe ground subsidence for years and is at risk from sea level rise due to the fact that 25 percent of the city is below sea level. Widodo thinks the move could relieve stress on Jakarta, which also experiences heavy traffic and high pollution levels.
