Thailand recently planned to introduce a special visa program for foreign tourists interested in training Muay Thai in the country. This program will allow them to extend their stay up to 90 days.
The Thai government has formed the National Soft Power Strategy Committee, headed by Paetongtarn Shinawatra as vice chairman of the council. The committee aims to promote Thailand's soft power in various sectors, including festivals, tourism, cuisine, art, design, sports, music, literature, film, drama, fashion, and games. One of its main focuses is the promotion of Muay Thai, the traditional Thai boxing sport.
Previously, foreign tourists coming to Thailand for Muay Thai training were granted a 60-day tourist visa. With the introduction of this special visa, they will be able to extend their stay to 90 days. However, detailed information on when this special visa will be officially available is still pending.
Through this initiative, Pimon Sriwikorn, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Thailand, stated that the program will not only raise awareness of Muay Thai among foreigners, but also signifies the government's commitment to improving Muay Thai training standards and the quality of trainers. The Skills Development Department will organize special training sessions for Muay Thai instructors, and each instructor will receive a certificate upon completion of the session.
The government will also encourage certified Muay Thai trainers in Thailand to conduct training in the country. This move will not only showcase Muay Thai on the international stage but also create opportunities for Thai trainers to increase their income.
Pimon also suggested that those interested in Muay Thai training can find affordable classes led by trustworthy trainers using secure booking and payment services through the Now Muay Thai website (www.nowmuaythai.com).
According to a report presented by Pimon in April last year, there are over 4,000 Muay Thai training centers worldwide, with approximately 60,000 to 70,000 foreigners visiting Thailand for Muay Thai training each year. Many foreign boxers actively participate in various Muay Thai competitions held in Thailand. Therefore, this initiative is expected to boost sports tourism in the Land of Smiles.
