The Thailand-Laos cross-border passenger train officially began its trial operation on Friday, marking a new era of railway connectivity between the two countries. This new line extends the Bangkok-Nong Khai route, connecting Thailand with Laos and the China-Laos railway.

The route linking Vientiane Lao PDR (Khamsavath) Railway Station to Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Station in Bangkok is the result of cooperation between the governments of Thailand and Laos to enhance inter-country connectivity and open new opportunities for trade, tourism, and cultural exchange.

The visit of Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to Laos on October 30, 2023, was a significant milestone in the Thailand-Laos railway initiative. Together with Lao PDR Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone, they inaugurated the Vientiane (Khamsavath) railway station, paving the way for expanding the rail network connecting the two countries.

Under the auspices of the Neighboring Countries Economic Development Cooperation Agency (NEDA), this project symbolizes strengthened bilateral relations and regional integration efforts.

Travel between Bangkok and Vientiane is now more accessible with the new Rapid No. 133/134 train. Rapid No. 133 departs from Bangkok at night and arrives in Vientiane the next morning. The return journey with Rapid No. 134 follows the same route. Additionally, the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) operates Rapid No. 147/148 between Udon Thani and Khamsavath Station.

The Bangkok-Vientiane (Khamsavath) train service will officially commence on Friday, July 19, 2024. Tickets can be booked via the D-Ticket mobile app, the website (www.dticket.railway.co.th), and at SRT ticket counters, with reservations available up to 180 days before departure.

Tourists visiting Bangkok can easily explore the city and continue to other destinations through various modes of transportation. Meanwhile, those visiting Udon Thani can enjoy a range of local activities and continue their journey to other destinations in Thailand.
