Viet Nam Outperforms Neighboring Countries with Three Domestic Routes in Southeast Asia's Top Ten Busiest Routes for August 2024. This report was released by OAG, a leading provider of digital flight information, intelligence, and analytics for airports, airlines, and travel technology companies.

Viet Nam’s Dominance in Southeast Asia’s Domestic Aviation

The Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route became the busiest in Southeast Asia and the third busiest globally in August 2024, according to OAG data. With 949,249 available seats, this route was surpassed only by Jeju International - Seoul Gimpo and Sapporo New Chitose - Tokyo Haneda.

This route also outperformed other domestic routes in the region, such as Jakarta - Makassar with 569,526 seats, Jakarta - Bali with 473,276 seats, and Cebu - Manila with 450,053 seats.

The Most Profitable Domestic Route

The Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City flight route has become a top choice for local airlines. Connecting Viet Nam’s two largest economic hubs, this route generates the highest revenue compared to other domestic routes.

High demand, especially from business travelers and tourists, has also driven ticket prices up to VND 3.5 million (US$140). In comparison, tickets for the Ho Chi Minh City - Da Nang route are more affordable, ranging from VND 1.2 million (US$48) to VND 2.5 million (US$100).

Two Other Routes in the List

In addition to the Hanoi - Ho Chi Minh City route, two other domestic routes in Viet Nam also made it into the top ten busiest domestic routes in Southeast Asia for August 2024. The Đà Nẵng - Ho Chi Minh City route ranked fifth with 427,779 seats, while the Đà Nẵng - Hanoi route took the seventh position with 410,000 seats.

A significant change occurred with the Đà Nẵng - Hanoi route, which previously held the second position. This route has now dropped to seventh place due to a 31% decrease in capacity compared to the previous month.

Other domestic routes that made it into Southeast Asia’s top ten include Surabaya - Makassar, Jakarta - Medan, Jakarta - Surabaya, and Davao - Manila.

Viet Nam Prepares for National Holiday

As the National Day holiday approaches, Viet Nam’s aviation sector is ready to increase the number of flights. The Civil Aviation Authority of Viet Nam reported that 4,257 flights will operate from August 30 to September 3, averaging 840 flights per day (600 domestic flights and 240 international flights).

This increase in the number of flights is expected to accommodate the rising number of passengers, particularly on domestic routes. Data shows that the number of available seats for domestic routes is estimated to reach 600,000, a 5% increase compared to the previous week.
