Strengthening Maritime Cooperation Amid South China Sea Tensions

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. agreed to strengthen cooperation between their coast guards on Monday (October 7) during Yoon's visit to Manila.

Both leaders expressed a firm commitment to deepening maritime cooperation as a concrete step in responding to China's claims over the South China Sea.

The two presidents jointly affirmed their resolve to uphold their nations' strategic partnership amid growing regional security challenges.

During their meeting at the Philippine Presidential Palace, an agreement was also signed, focusing on nuclear energy collaboration and strengthening their coast guard forces.

Tensions in the region, particularly between the Philippines and China, have drawn attention from South Korea, which has repeatedly expressed concern over the escalating conflict.

Earlier in March, South Korea raised serious concerns regarding China's frequent use of water cannons to drive away Filipino fishing vessels in the contested waters.

This situation has become a significant threat to the Philippines, especially as China has constructed several artificial islands equipped with missiles and airstrips for fighter jets, reinforcing its presence in the disputed area. China’s actions are part of its broader efforts to expand its territorial claims.

Furthermore, China has disregarded international rulings, which declared that much of the area it claims lacks legal basis.

Bilateral Cooperation Agreement and Military Modernization

The bilateral cooperation agreement signed between the two nations also includes discussions on the supply of raw materials and a feasibility study to revive the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant in the Philippines.

During a press conference, President Yoon stated that South Korea and the Philippines are entering a new chapter in their strategic partnership, aiming to strengthen bilateral ties.

He further emphasized that South Korea is committed to actively contributing to the modernization of the Philippines' military capabilities in response to the increasing tensions between the Philippines and China over the South China Sea conflict.
