Khâu Vai Love Market is a unique event where former lovers reunite with each year to reminisce about their past relationship. This annual market is held in Mèo Vạc District of Hà Giang, Viet Nam and takes place on the 27th day of the third lunar month, which usually falls in April or May.
At this fair, young men and women, both married and unmarried, would come and interact with each other. Unmarried couples meet up, chat, and possibly form a relafionship, while married couples can see their past lovers to share their life experiences.
Background
It is said that Khâu Vai originated from an ancient love story between a young man and a young woman. The two came from completely different backgrounds and social standings. For that reason, their families did not agree to their relationship and they were forced to separate. Though parted, their love remained unchanged. They made a pact to reunite every year on the 27th day of the third lunar month to fulfill their longing.
Following that legend, former couples of today would take the opportunity to reunite at the love market and either rekindle their previous relationship, or build a new, more platonic one.
A Three-Day Celebration
The market lasts for 3 days.
On the first day, people would dress up in their finest clothes to celebrate the festival with fun activities and prays.
On the next day, offerings of boiled rice would be offered to Buddhist monks. People also build sandy mountains to wish for happiness and luck in their lives.
Finally, on the third and last day, people would burn incense and pray to Buddha for blessings in the coming years and forgiveness for past mistakes.
