Voice of Baceprot (VoB) is all female, hijab-wearing metal band that comes from Indonesia.  These 3 muslim women have been singing together since high school, in conservative West Java Indonesia.

This band named Voice of Baceprot, which the word of baceprot is a Sundanese word that means “noisy”. They chose the name to represent their energy and enthusiasm while making music.

It is so unique and kind of fresh-air for this band which has consisted of three female hijab-wearing and played metal-punk music. Beside of their uniqueness, they have got some achievements that their band was named on Forbes and BBC Woman in 2024.

These three female hijab wearing heavy metal band have become the first Indonesian band to play at Glastonbury in the UK in 2024. The Glastobury festival is one of the world’s biggest and has stars like Dua lipa, SZA,  Avril Lavigne, and Coldplay as headliners.

They were honored to be the first Indonesian musician to perform at Glastonbury Festival (Woodsises Stage) after 54 years which coincides with the 75th celebration of Indonesia’s diplomatic relation with the United Kingdom. It is and iconic UK festival and VOB had appeared and performed on June 28 at there.

Voice of Baceprot was named on Forbes 30 under 30 in Entertainment & Sports list with their members that were in under 30 years old. This band consist three members: Firda Marsya Kurnia (23), Widi Rahmawati (22), and Euis Siti Aisyah (23) who were from Garut , West Java.

This trio were formed in 2014, introduced to metal in their early teens by a teacher who taught them how to play instruments and helped set up their band. At first, they were covering hits by groups such as Metallica for school events to creating their own music and touring internationally.

And then they have their own single, their latest single “God Allow me please to play music” has had over 5 million views on Youtube. This band is a girl band defying stereotypes and following a unique path who live in a country where it is unusual for women to perform metal, but they don’t plan to stop.

Firda Marsya Kurnia is a member of Voice of Baceprot (VoB) who plays as lead vocalist, and guitarist at VoB. She sings in English and Sundanese which were the most widely spoken languages in Indonesia.

She sings with the lyrics that express frustrations with patriarchy and other stereotype that their band had been facing on. The challenging gender and religious norms is something Firda Marsya Kurnia is face and sing about.

There has been some pushback from more conservative Muslims who did not respond well when the female Muslim ventured in heavy metal band. But the band have come a long way, they got performed at Glastonbury in UK and named on Forbes 30 under 30.
