Indonesia has reaffirmed its status as the most sought-after scuba diving destination in Asia, with the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam following closely behind. This ranking is based on the latest survey conducted by digital travel platform Agoda, which highlights the preferences of scuba divers across the region.

The survey gathered responses from 850 divers across 11 key Asian markets—namely Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam. Conducted in February 2025 via Agoda’s platform, the study provides a comprehensive insight into the evolving trends of diving tourism in Asia, particularly in Southeast Asia.

With over 17,000 islands and its strategic location at the heart of the Coral Triangle, Indonesia has long been a magnet for international divers. Its stunning marine biodiversity and breathtaking coral reefs make it a dream destination for underwater enthusiasts.

Southeast Asia: A Global Diving Hotspot

Southeast Asia continues to attract divers worldwide, thanks to its rich marine ecosystems. In its 2025 Scuba Deals Survey, Agoda highlighted that Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand are the top three most popular diving destinations in Asia, while Malaysia and Vietnam complete the top five.

Thailand remains the top choice among Vietnamese travelers due to its crystal-clear waters and world-class diving spots. However, high interest in diving tourism is also evident in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines—particularly among Vietnamese tourists.

Relaxation & Exploration: The Main Motivations for Diving

The Agoda survey found that the primary reason divers travel is to experience the serenity of the open sea. Around 30% of respondents cited relaxation as their main motivation, particularly those from the Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Additionally, 24% of travelers are drawn to the underwater world for its mysterious charm and rich marine biodiversity. This underscores the allure of the ocean as an experience that is not only thrilling but also deeply calming.

Short Getaways with a Focus on Experience

While travelers appreciate budget-friendly accommodations, 40% are willing to spend up to 30% more for the best diving experiences. Current trends indicate that short trips are the preferred choice, with 48% of divers opting for vacations lasting 4 to 7 days, while another 41% favor packed yet fulfilling weekend getaways.

Coral Reefs Remain the Top Attraction

A staggering 75% of divers consider coral reef locations their preferred destinations. The vibrant colors and abundant marine life across Asia make diving in the region a must-have experience for ocean lovers.
