Bromo: The Sacred Volcano
Mount Bromo is an active volcano located in East Java, Indonesia. Bromo stands at 2,614 meters above sea level and spans four regencies: Probolinggo, Pasuruan, Lumajang, and Malang. Mount Bromo is famous as a major tourist attraction in East Java and is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
According to local beliefs, the name Bromo originates from the word 'Brahma,' a major Hindu deity. To this day, Bromo is considered a sacred place by the people inhabiting the mountain, known as the Tengger tribe.
The Tengger tribe still frequently holds the annual Yadnya Kasada or Kasodo ceremony at Mount Bromo. They celebrate the Kasodo festival each year by offering sacrifices in the form of livestock and food to the gods, which are thrown into the crater of Mount Bromo as an expression of gratitude to the Almighty.
Bromo Crater: Witness the Thrill of an Active Volcano
Mount Bromo has an active crater, with a crater diameter of approximately 800 meters stretching from south to north, and roughly 600 meters when measured from west to east. Additionally, this crater also has a dangerous area in the form of a circle with a radius of about 4 kilometers measured from the center of Mount Bromo's crater.
You can reach the crater by hiking or riding a horse, climbing 250 steps to reach the crater's peak.
When you reach the top of the crater, you can directly witness the phenomenon of an active volcano with white smoke billowing from the crater, offering an amazing and thrilling experience.
Furthermore, you can also see the combined views of the savanna, known as 'Teletubbies Hill', and the sea of sand from the height of Mount Bromo at this crater’s peak.
The Whispering Sea of Sand
The Sea of Sand, a part of Mount Bromo, makes the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park as the only national park in Indonesia with a sea of sand. This Sea of Sand covers an area of about 5,920 hectares, spans around Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, Mount Widodaren, Mount Kursi, and Mount Watangan. The Sea of Sand is located at an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level.
The beauty of the Sea of Sand at Mount Bromo led to it being used as a filming location for the movie 'Whispering Sands' in 2001. This is why the Sea of Sand is also known as Whispering Sands.
Moreover, when you are in the middle of this sea of sand and the wind is blowing, the sound of the wind sweeping across the sand creates a hissing sound, giving the impression that this vast desert is whispering something in your ears.

At the same time, you will be captivated by the beautiful scenery of Mount Bromo, Mount Batok, and Mount Semeru, which stand side by side as part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
Savanna Field: Bromo's 'Teletubbies Hill'
