In a global tech trend that's literally on the wrist, Malaysia has secured a surprising yet impressive spot in the top 10 smartwatch-using nations in the world. With 31.3% of internet users embracing smartwatches, Malaysia stands shoulder-to-shoulder with tech-forward countries like Australia and Ireland—and crucially, it’s the only Southeast Asian country to make the list.

This ranking comes from a global digital report by We Are Social and Meltwater, and it speaks volumes about Malaysia’s growing appetite for wearable technology. Smartwatches have gone far beyond just counting steps—they now monitor heart health, track sleep, enable mobile payments, manage notifications, and even act as personal assistants. And Malaysians are clearly on board.

At the top of the list is Croatia, with a surprising 36.5% of users donning smartwatches, followed closely by the Czech Republic at 36%. These European nations lead a diverse list that includes high-income countries, emerging markets, and digitally agile societies. The UAE ranks third at 35.1%, showing how smartwatches have become integral in hyper-connected Gulf states.

Turkey lands in fourth place (34.5%), followed by a tie between India and Norway at 33.4%, showing how smartwatch adoption cuts across both population scale and per capita income. Hong Kong (31.7%)—long known for its tech-savvy population—sits just above the trio of Australia, Ireland, and Malaysia, each at 31.3%.

What’s notable is how Malaysia holds its own in such globally competitive company. While countries like Singapore and Thailand are often seen as digital trendsetters in Southeast Asia, they’re absent from this list. Malaysia's strong position likely stems from a mix of affordable smartwatch options, increasing fitness awareness, and the popularity of mobile wallets and digital lifestyles.

From office corridors in KL to joggers along Penang’s waterfront, smartwatches are fast becoming the default wrist accessory. Whether it’s an Apple Watch, a Samsung Galaxy Watch, Huawei, Xiaomi, or other brands, Malaysians are using them not just to tell time—but to optimize life.

As wearable tech becomes more powerful and more integrated into daily routines, Malaysia’s early lead could evolve into long-term dominance in the region.
