The tarsier is a very special primate. It lives in the tropical forests of Southeast Asia, including Indonesia and the Philippines. These tiny creatures are famous for their strange looks and amazing skills.
They are very small, usually about the size of a human fist. They have round heads, long tails, and sticky pads on their fingers to help them climb. Tarsiers are active at night and spend their time hunting for food.
Fossils show that tarsiers have lived on Earth for millions of years. They are some of the oldest primates still alive today.
Big Eyes, Tiny Brains
A tarsier’s most famous feature is its enormous eyes. For their body size, they have the largest eyes of any mammal in the world. Each eyeball is about 16 millimeters wide, which is actually bigger and heavier than its brain.
Their brain weighs only two to three grams, but their eyes are built to see perfectly in the dark. Because these eyes are so large, they are fixed in the skull and cannot move in their sockets.
To look around, the tarsier must turn its entire head. They have a special neck that allows them to rotate their heads 180 degrees in both directions. This means they can see in almost every direction without moving their bodies.
This ability is very much like an owl, helping them spot predators or prey quickly. Their large, mobile ears also help them hear the tiny sounds of insects at night.
Incredible Leaping and Hunting Skills
The tarsier’s name comes from its very long tarsal, or ankle, bones. These bones act like built-in springs, making them the best jumpers of all primates.
They can jump more than 5 meters in one go, which is over 40 times their own body length. This is an amazing feat for an animal that is only 10 to 15 centimeters long. Their long tail also helps them balance and steer while they are flying through the air.
Tarsiers are also the only primates that are 100% carnivorous. They do not eat any plants, fruits, or leaves. Instead, they hunt live prey like insects, spiders, lizards, and even small birds or bats.
They wait silently on tree branches and then leap to grab their food with their strong hands. They even have special grooming claws on their toes to keep themselves clean.
Tarsiers have a very special way of talking to each other. They use ultrasound, which is a sound so high-pitched that humans cannot hear it.
They can make sounds up to 91 kilohertz, which is the highest recorded for any land mammal. This allows them to talk without attracting the attention of dangerous predators.
Their Habitat in Southeast Asia
These primates live only on islands in Southeast Asia. Indonesia has many species of this animal, making it a very important home for them. Most of these species live on Sulawesi Island and the islands nearby.
There are many types of Indonesian tarsiers, such as the tiny Pygmy tarsier and the Siau Island tarsier. Each kind has evolved to live in different places like rainforests, swamps, or bamboo thickets.
Tarsiers can also be found in the Philippines. The country is home to the distinct Philippine tarsier (Carlito syrichta), found mainly on southeastern islands like Bohol, Samar, Leyte, and Mindanao.
Sadly, tarsiers are now endangered because their forest homes are disappearing. Protecting these forests is the only way to make sure these incredible animals survive.
