Eucalyptus deglupta is a tree species from the Myrtaceae family known for its bark display, which features a spectrum of gradient colors.
The Eucalyptus deglupta tree grows naturally in eastern Indonesia, as well as parts of the Philippines and Papua New Guinea. Its trunk can reach heights of up to 60 meters with a diameter of up to 2 meters.
The color patterns on the trunk of Eucalyptus deglupta form naturally without the interference of external pigments. The tree trunk creates gradients of green, blue, purple, and maroon as a result of biological processes within its bark layers.
The Only Eucalyptus Growing in Tropical Rainforests
Eucalyptus deglupta stands as the only Eucalyptus species fully adapted to tropical rainforest habitats, ranging from lowlands to lower montane regions. Tropical plant species of such nature cannot grow naturally in areas with a distinct dry season.
The existence of the rainbow tree requires a high supply of water from annual rainfall, with average monthly precipitation usually exceeding 150 mm.
The natural distribution of Eucalyptus deglupta demands full overhead sunlight above the canopy. Rainbow trees typically colonize riverbanks, alluvial flats, and open areas created by natural disturbances such as landslides and volcanic eruptions.
According to the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) Red List, the conservation status of Eucalyptus deglupta is classified as Vulnerable due to threats from forest land conversion and illegal logging in its native habitat.
Outside its native habitat, Eucalyptus deglupta has been widely cultivated across humid tropical regions worldwide. Cultivation outside production forests serves primarily as shade trees in botanical gardens and research facilities.
The Natural Art of Bark Shedding
The mechanism behind the color changes on the trunk of Eucalyptus deglupta occurs through a process called desquamation, which is the peeling of the outermost bark layer.
Bark shedding does not happen all at once across the entire trunk surface, but rather progresses gradually in vertical strips throughout the year.
As the outer strip of bark peels away, the new inner bark layer becomes exposed to the surface. The fresh layer is bright green at first due to high concentrations of chlorophyll. Over time, the newly exposed tissue reacts with oxygen and sunlight.
Oxidation of sap and tannins within the bark tissue alters the light green pigment to dark green, before gradually shifting into shades of blue, purple, pink, and dark brown. The varying timing of shedding across each strip creates a simultaneous blend of different color phases on a single tree.
A Fast-Growing Giant Tree
Eucalyptus deglupta is categorized as a pioneer species with a rapid growth rate. During the first few years of growth, the rainbow tree can increase in height by 2 to 3 meters per year given adequate water and full sunlight.
Such rapid growth allows the rainbow eucalyptus to reach a maximum height of approximately 60 to 75 meters within a few decades in optimal environments.
The fast growth rate and straight trunk yield medium-density wood, making Eucalyptus deglupta a frequent choice for paper pulp production and light construction timber.
Reproductive processes in Eucalyptus deglupta are supported by its flower and seed structures. The species produces compound flowers dominated by clusters of delicate, creamy-white stamens surrounding a central floral cup. Insect pollinators, such as bees, assist in pollination as they land on the floral cup.
Once pollination is complete, the flower develops into a small, woody capsule fruit measuring approximately 3 to 5 millimeters. Inside the capsule are tiny, thin-winged seeds dispersed naturally by the wind.
