Most Popular Gaming Genres by Generation

The 2024 Global Gamer Study by Newzoo, which surveyed over 73,000 individuals across 36 markets, offers a detailed look at how gaming preferences differ across generations, alongside a snapshot of the broader gaming landscape.

Generational Gaming Preferences

The study reveals distinct gaming habits between older and younger generations:

  • Baby Boomers and Gen X: These groups tend to favor puzzle games that offer cognitive challenges and relaxation, such as Candy Crush and Sudoku-inspired applications. These games are often more casual and less immersive, providing entertainment that’s both engaging and calming.

  • Younger Generations: Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha gravitate towards action-packed and narrative-driven games. Popular titles such as Minecraft, The Last of Us, and Baldur’s Gate 3 resonate particularly with these younger gamers, who prefer more complex gameplay and deeper storytelling.

Console vs. PC Gaming

In terms of market share, console gaming continues to dominate, accounting for 57% of the industry's total share. In contrast, PC gaming makes up 43%. This trend highlights the ongoing appeal of consoles, which remain accessible and versatile, while PC gaming holds a steady, though slightly smaller, share of the market.

The study sheds light on how gaming is evolving across different age groups, with technology and game design driving a shift towards more immersive and interactive experiences for younger players, while older generations continue to enjoy games that are simpler yet mentally stimulating.
