The 2024 Global Gamer Study by Newzoo, which surveyed over 73,000 individuals across 36 markets, offers a detailed look at how gaming preferences differ across generations, alongside a snapshot of the broader gaming landscape.
The study reveals distinct gaming habits between older and younger generations:
Baby Boomers and Gen X: These groups tend to favor puzzle games that offer cognitive challenges and relaxation, such as Candy Crush and Sudoku-inspired applications. These games are often more casual and less immersive, providing entertainment that’s both engaging and calming.
Younger Generations: Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha gravitate towards action-packed and narrative-driven games. Popular titles such as Minecraft, The Last of Us, and Baldur’s Gate 3 resonate particularly with these younger gamers, who prefer more complex gameplay and deeper storytelling.
In terms of market share, console gaming continues to dominate, accounting for 57% of the industry's total share. In contrast, PC gaming makes up 43%. This trend highlights the ongoing appeal of consoles, which remain accessible and versatile, while PC gaming holds a steady, though slightly smaller, share of the market.
The study sheds light on how gaming is evolving across different age groups, with technology and game design driving a shift towards more immersive and interactive experiences for younger players, while older generations continue to enjoy games that are simpler yet mentally stimulating.
