China’s electric vehicle giant BYD has officially started building the largest car manufacturing plant in Southeast Asia, choosing Subang, Indonesia, as its base.

This move puts Indonesia ahead of Thailand, which has long been the region’s automotive leader, marking a significant shift in the balance of industrial power.

The state-of-the-art facility is expected to massively boost local employment by opening thousands of job opportunities in the coming years.

With a strong focus on electric vehicles, the plant aligns with Indonesia’s green transformation agenda and strengthens its ambitions to become a regional EV production hub.

BYD’s investment not only signals confidence in Indonesia’s market potential but also reflects the country’s growing role in the global automotive supply chain.
