In a bold move symbolizing its break from colonial influence, Niger has officially replaced French with Hausa as its national language.

This decision was made by the ruling military junta as part of a broader push to reclaim cultural identity and prioritize indigenous languages over those imposed during colonial rule.

Hausa, already widely spoken across Niger and neighboring countries, is expected to foster greater national unity and reflect the linguistic reality of the majority of its citizens.

While the shift has been praised by many as a step toward decolonization, it also marks a significant political statement, especially amid the country’s tense relations with France.
