Scientists have found a hidden reservoir of liquid water deep beneath Mars’ rocky surface, using seismic data from NASA’s Insight lander, which recorded over 1,300 Mars quakes during its four-year mission.

By analyzing how seismic waves traveled through the Martian crust, researchers detected signals indicating water exists between 10 to 20 kilometers underground.

This is a major discovery because while frozen water and vapor have been observed before, this is the first clear evidence of liquid water on Mars—and it could help explain where the planet's ancient water went.

Although this underground water is too deep to be easily accessed, it offers hope for understanding Mars’ climate history and possibly finding signs of life in these hidden, habitable zones.
