Time Out has officially crowned Penang's George Town as Asia's best street food city in their latest September 2025 ranking, surpassing renowned culinary destinations like Hanoi and Bangkok to claim the top spot.

Writer Katie Lockhart praised Penang as a food paradise where visitors could "happily eat street food for the rest of their lives," highlighting the city's unique melting pot of Malay, Chinese, Peranakan, and Indian culinary influences that create an unparalleled dining experience.

The ranking specifically celebrated Penang's signature dishes including char kuey teow (described as "the ultimate plate to order"), assam laksa, roti canai, and Hokkien mee, with recommendations for iconic establishments like Goggles Man Char Kuey Teow and Left-handed Char Koay Teow.

Time Out's comprehensive evaluation was based on critical factors including affordability, accessibility, and dish quality, with Hanoi securing second place, Singapore third, Bangkok eighth, and Cambodia's Phnom Penh ninth in the prestigious Asian street food cities list.

This international recognition reinforces Penang's long-standing reputation as Malaysia's street food capital and validates what food enthusiasts worldwide have known—that George Town's centuries-old hawker culture and diverse culinary heritage make it an unrivaled destination for authentic Asian street food experiences.
