Press freedom hit its lowest in 25 years, per Reporters Without Borders (RSF) 2026 Index. Over half of 180 countries are rated "difficult" or "very serious."

People under "good" press freedom dropped from 20% to under 1%, with only Norway-led Northern Europe still qualifying.

RSF's Anne Bocande warned journalism is increasingly criminalised in 110 countries. The U.S. fell 7 places to 64th, Niger dropped 37, while Syria climbed 36 after Assad's fall.
