Indonesia celebrates a monumental achievement as UNESCO officially recognizes Kebumen Geopark in Central Java and Meratus Geopark in South Kalimantan as new members of the prestigious Global Geoparks Network, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s ongoing commitment to geodiversity conservation, education, and sustainable community-based tourism, and elevating its total number of UNESCO Global Geoparks to twelve — a remarkable feat that places the country among the leaders in environmental heritage management across Southeast Asia.

These two geological wonders, each uniquely endowed with ancient rock formations, fossil-rich sites, dense rainforests, and vibrant cultural traditions like those of the indigenous Dayak people, represent more than just scenic attractions — they are living landscapes where Earth’s history, biodiversity, and human narratives intertwine to offer a deeper understanding of natural processes and the interconnectedness of ecosystems and societies.

Through this international recognition, both Kebumen and Meratus are poised to benefit from enhanced global visibility, increased eco-tourism, and foreign investment opportunities that will help empower local communities through sustainable development strategies focused on infrastructure, environmental education, and conservation science.

Furthermore, the designation encourages collaborative stewardship, reminding the world that protecting such geologically and culturally significant areas is not just a regional responsibility but a shared global mission, especially in the face of growing ecological threats like climate change and deforestation.

By embracing this honor, Indonesia signals its role not only as a guardian of natural beauty and cultural richness but also as a forward-thinking nation committed to safeguarding Earth’s geological legacy for present and future generations through innovation, inclusivity, and international cooperation.
