Viet Nam has launched construction of its longest sea-crossing bridge, an 18-kilometer span connecting Cà Mau Province to Hon Khoai Island, with completion expected by the end of 2028.

The $1 billion project launched on August 19 will feature four lanes with a design speed of 80 kph and will be built to international sea-crossing standards by Army Corps 12 under the Ministry of National Defense.

Upon completion, the bridge will become Southeast Asia's third-longest sea bridge, behind Brunei's Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Bridge (30km) and Malaysia's Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge (24km), according to the Southeast Asia Iron and Steel Institute.

The project includes a 150-meter steel arch navigational span and will connect with a massive deep-water port on Hon Khoai Island capable of handling ships up to 250,000 DWT and processing 20 million tons of cargo annually.

Pham Thanh Ngai, chairman of the Ca Mau People's Committee, emphasized the strategic importance of the location at the heart of Southeast Asia's maritime routes, creating a new gateway to Viet Nam's southern frontier.
