Vesak collaboration strengthens spiritual and cultural tourism in Indonesia's Borobudur

Borobudur lit up with 2,569 lanterns and 450 drones during Vesak 2569 BE, as tens of thousands gathered for a night where tradition and technology intertwined, transforming the temple into a sacred spectacle curated by InJourney.

The celebration followed the arrival of 36 monks from Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and the U.S., who completed a 2,600 km Thudong pilgrimage, reaffirming Borobudur’s global spiritual significance as they joined the silent Pradakshina walk.

Between May 1–13, over 100,000 visitors arrived, with nearly 46,000 on May 12 alone, making this the most attended Vesak yet and reflecting a 25% increase from the previous year.

Local life flourished as 2,000+ SMEs, artisans, homestays, and jeep tour operators benefited directly from inclusive planning that turned spiritual momentum into community empowerment.

From Pasar Medang to Kampung Seni, InJourney placed culture at the heart of the celebration—making Borobudur not just a temple, but a living, open sanctuary where heritage, harmony, and hope come together.
