Indonesia could be home of various rice dishes in the world. As the country’s staple food, nasi (rice) is an important part of Indonesia’s culinary culture. And Indonesians are very creative to mix the rice with some savory dishes. These traditional Indonesian rice dishes should be written on your weekend’s lunch list.
Nasi Jinggo
Opting for nasi jinggo is a way to save money if you’re traveling in Bali, while still enjoying delicious traditional food. Since each portion is very small, expect to eat several portions of this spicy dish in one sitting.
Nasi jamblang
Gaining its name from an area called Jamblang in Cirebon, West Java, this dish is indeed one of the most popular traditional meals in the region. It usually consists of several side dishes like salted fish, tofu, vegetables and lung.
Nasi liwet
Hailing from Surakarta in Central Java, nasi liwet maintains quite a reputation in Jakarta as it is sometimes used to celebrate special occasions. The main characteristic of nasi liwet is the delectable combination of coconut milk, chicken broth and different spices.
Nasi langgi
Also from Surakarta, nasi langgi is popular among Jakartans as well. Usually accompanied by side dishes like eggs and chicken, its spicy yet sweet taste has its own charm.
Nasi tutug oncom
As the name suggests, nasi tutug oncom features oncom (fermented soybean paste). It can easily be found in West Java cities like Tasikmalaya or Bandung. The savory taste of oncom adds a rich flavor to this dish.
Nasi begana
Tegal is not only famous for its warung tegal (warteg), which can be spotted basically everywhere in Jakarta but also hailing from the region is nasi begana, which is conveniently served by wrapping the rice inside a banana leaf.
Nasi kucing
Despite its low price, nasi kucing does not skimp on flavor. Just like nasi jinggo, it comes in small portions, which may result in you eating five or six servings in one sitting.
So, what would you like to eat this weekend?
