Malaysia formally installed its 15th king on Tuesday (Dec 13) in Kuala Lumpur (KL).

The 47-year-old Sultan Muhammad V had been elected to take over from Kedah's Sultan Abdul Halim by the Conference of Rulers at its 243rd meeting in October.

Upon his arrival in KL after a ceremonial departure from Kelantan on Tuesday morning, Sultan Muhammad V was greeted by Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak at the Parliament Square, where he inspected the guard of honour.

The special 244th meeting at Istana Negara saw Sultan Muhammad V, who studied at St Cross College in Oxford and the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, take the oath of office of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

Perak's Sultan Nazrin Shah was also proclaimed the new king's deputy at the ceremony.

Sultan Abdul Halim of Kedah, 89, and his wife had been given a symbolic send-off on Monday at the end of their five-year term under the country's rotating monarchy system.
