1.14 Million Foreign Tourists Visit Indonesia in April

The Central Statistics Agency (BPS) recorded that there were 1.14 million foreign tourists who visited Indonesia in April 2017.

The number increases 26.75 percent compared to the number of visits in the same period in 2016 which was 901,090 visitors. Compared to March 2017, it also increased as much as 7.09 percent.

“The number of foreign visits on April 2017 consists of foreign tourists who visited through 19 main gates as many as 994,130 visits, and the foreign visitors who made a visit other than through the 19 main gates were 148,050,” BPS head Suhariyanto said on Friday, June 2.

"The number is still dominated by tourists from China at 15.8 percent," he said.

In second place was Singapore with 127,100 tourists, or 12.7 percent of the total, followed by Malaysia with 118,000 (11.8 percent), Australia with 95,700 (9.6 percent) and India with 39,000 (3.9 percent).

The overall number of foreign visits from January to April 2017 reached 4.2 million visits, or it went up 19.34 percent compared to the same period last year which were 3.52 million visits.

Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport had the highest number of foreign tourist arrivals in April with a total of 474,600. Meanwhile, Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and Batam's Hang Nadim International Airport ranked second and third with 211,000 and 134,000, respectively.

Sam Ratulangi International Airport in Manado, North Sulawesi, saw a 312 percent increase in foreign tourist arrivals compared to the same period last year. This can be ascribed to the commencement of direct flights between Manado and destinations in China.

There was also a 127 percent increase in foreign arrivals at Lombok International Airport in West Nusa Tenggara due to increased flights from Malaysia and Brunei.

The rise of the number, Suhariyanto claimed, is influenced by the launch of international flight routes in several airports which boost the frequency of flights. The highest increase of foreign tourists was found at Sam Ratulangi Airport, North Sulawesi, and Internasional Airport in Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara.

Republic of Indonesia Ministry of Tourism has set a target of at least 15 million foreign tourist arrivals this year.
