The Colors of 2018 Shell Eco-Marathon Asia. Congratulations Winners!

Shell Eco-marathon is a global programme, built to offer students hands-on opportunities to develop ideas and technology, knowledge and skills, within an arena of competition.

For 2018 edition, it closed down on Saturday (March 10) evening, with colourful results with Southeast Asian winners conquered the main winner stage.

Shell Eco-marathon is divided into two main categories: Urban Concept and Prototype.

UrbanConcept vehicles resemble modern road-going cars, while Prototype vehicles are three-wheeled, highly-aerodynamic mini formula cars.

The cars are subdivided into three energy classes: Internal Combustion (ICE) – gasoline, diesel, ethanol (biofuel), Gas to Liquid (GTL), CNG (compressed natural gas); Battery-Electric power; and Hydrogen fuel cell.

Over 120 teams from 18 countries put their self-designed and built energy-efficient vehicles to the test.

There is two key competition in SEM, the first being the Mileage Challenge where the UrbanConcept and Prototype cars compete to travel the farthest, with the least amount of fuel.

With this year’s winding 1.2-kilometre track featuring multiple turns and gentle slopes, driving strategy and vehicle aerodynamism have played a big role in determining which teams have the most energy-efficient vehicles.

Shell Eco-marathon Global Technical Director Shanna Simmons commented on the teams‘ resourcefulness, “Shell Eco-marathon Asia is indicative of this generation’s aspirations for energy efficiency.

It’s exciting to see recent technological advances for internal combustion engines, battery-electric systems, and hydrogen fuel cells utilized in this year’s UrbanConcept vehicles. The student-built UrbanConcept vehicles, which are modelled after real-world cars, have attained incredible mileage while mirroring modern industry trends – and it reflects of the direction of automotive mobility in Asia.“
