Aircraft manufacturer Boeing and Lion Air Group have agreed on the appointment of the latter to become the first airliner to receive Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes.

The planes will be operated by Thai Lion Air, a subsidiary of Lion Air Group, to strengthen its existing routes and to open new domestic, regional and international routes, said Thai Lion Air CEO Darsito Hendro Seputro in a statement on Thursday.

"Boeing 737 MAX 9 is suitable for our growing business in Thailand,” said Darsito as quoted by kompas.com, adding that it was in line with the airline’s expansion plan to open new flights to Bangladesh, China and India.

The Boeing 737 MAX 9 planes will be operated both for passenger and cargo planes, he said.

Lion Air was also the first airliner to add the Boeing 737 MAX 8 to its fleet. It also announced that it would soon receive 50 Boeing 737 MAX 10 aircraft.

“Lion Air Group is an airliner that relies on the Boeing 737 MAX for single-aisle aircraft service,” said Boeing commercial airplanes CEO Kevin McAllister.
