According to the nation's Investment Minister Bahlil Lahadalia, Indonesia will begin manufacturing batteries for electric vehicles early in 2024.

The declaration was made following Bahlil's attendance at a small cabinet meeting on the advancement of the ecosystem for electric vehicles on Friday, January 13, at the Merdeka Palace, which was presided over by President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo.

According to the proposal, production [of electric vehicle batteries] would begin in the first half of 2024, with LG of South Korea developing it in Karawang, according to a press release from the Cabinet Secretariat.

The creation of the EV ecosystem by CATL [China's Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited] and LG from upstream to downstream would begin this year, the minister added.

Bahlil emphasized the significance of creating the electric car ecosystem, which includes batteries, in order to safeguard Indonesia's sizable domestic market from imports.

Indonesia shouldn't be left behind, he said, "since we know that other nations, like Thailand, provide a lot of'sweeteners' to boost the industrial development in their country."

Indonesia has the ability to export goods as well. State-owned businesses have been instructed to get different infrastructures ready in response to that.

The building of an EV ecosystem is intended to foster innovation and job growth, according to the government. A green industry is another area of emphasis for the development of the EV ecosystem.

"We will restrict the development of smelters that utilize non-renewable materials going forward. This relates to the government's concern for the growth of green industry and energy.
