In an effort to boost its tourism appeal, Thailand has announced an interesting plan to provide free SIM cards to foreign tourists visiting the country. Through a campaign called "Welcome Back to Thailand," the initiative is the result of a collaboration between the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) and Advanced Info Service (AIS).
According to a report by The Thaiger, the joint initiative aims to attract international visitors by providing them with Amazing Thailand SIM cards, which come with various digital benefits and services.
Under the plans, TAT will distribute 1 million mobile SIM cards with the additional benefit of exclusive electronic coupons from various cooperation partners. The distribution is scheduled to start on Tuesday (October 17) and will continue until March 31, 2027.
The SIM card distribution is being organized by TAT's South Asia-Pacific regional office in collaboration with various international travel agents, airlines and related associations.
Chattan Kunjara Na Ayudhya, TAT's Deputy Governor for International Marketing in South Asia-Pacific, explained that this campaign move is an important strategy to boost Thailand's tourism sector towards the end of the year.
The campaign also invites foreign travelers planning to visit Thailand to participate through leading online travel agent (OTA) platforms in their respective countries.
By purchasing goods or services through these OTAs, travelers will have the opportunity to use the Amazing Thailand SIM card for free. The card provides high-speed Internet access with up to 8GB of data during the free trial period.
The card also gives travelers access to a wide range of streaming services through dedicated apps.
Other benefits include travel insurance of up to 50,000 baht, equivalent to around US$1,384, as well as discounts on shopping, accommodation at leading hotels and dining at top restaurants.
