Malaysia's Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, has announced that electric vehicles (EVs) will be the first choice as the official fleet to transport ASEAN leaders and delegates in 2025. This announcement was made during the forum on "The Energy Sector as a Catalyst for Sustainable and Inclusive Socioeconomic Growth" held on October 28.
The decision, which was recently approved by the Cabinet, reflects Malaysia's firm commitment to energy sustainability and the transition to clean energy. Accordingly, the government will strive to secure as many electric vehicles as possible.
Anwar explained that the use of EVs will be more economical compared to fossil fuel-powered vehicles.
The decision to use EVs as the official fleet for ASEAN leaders and delegates next year will also be communicated to all ASEAN member states.
Accelerating EV Infrastructure for ASEAN Chairmanship
To support the use of electric vehicles as official transportation for next year's ASEAN Summit, the government has set a target to double the number of EV charging stations to 4,000 units by next year. This was stated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof in an official announcement on October 29.
According to him, accelerating the development of charging stations will be more effective through comprehensive collaboration involving both the national electricity company and various private sector parties.
By transforming the transportation and manufacturing sectors, Fadillah said Malaysia could achieve a renewable energy share of 40% by 2030, doubling the current level. He also emphasized the need to consider safety, security and affordable power supply as the use of electric vehicles is promoted.
