China has accused the Philippines of violating its commitment to deploy a missile system in the disputed region. According to a Reuters report on Wednesday (February 26, 2025), Manila initially stated that the missiles would only be stationed temporarily.
However, there have been no signs of withdrawal or escalating tensions between the two countries. Beijing views the Philippines’ actions as a display of bad faith that further complicates the situation in the region.

The Philippines' decision to deploy the missile system is seen as part of its national defense strategy amid rising geopolitical tensions. However, Beijing perceives this move as a direct threat to its territorial claims in the South China Sea, where China asserts sovereignty over most of the waters.
The continued presence of these missiles, which should have been withdrawn according to previous agreements, has further strained relations between the two nations.

Meanwhile, the United States has also become a factor in the escalating situation. Beijing accuses Washington of significantly influencing the Philippines’ defense policies and claims that U.S. involvement is exacerbating regional instability.
The Philippine government has not officially responded to China’s demands that the missile system be removed. This uncertainty has further heightened tensions, and various regional stakeholders are closely monitoring the developments.
