Surge in Sensitive Goods Exports to Russia
The United States continues to closely monitor countries suspected of aiding Russia in acquiring priority goods that support its defense industry.
According to data cited from Regtechtimes via SindoNews.com, exports of sensitive goods to Russia have skyrocketed. In 2022, the export value was recorded at approximately USD 8.3 million, but it surged to USD 98.7 million in 2023—a staggering increase of over 1,000%.
This trend has continued into 2024, with exports still reaching a high level of around USD 90 million. This significant rise suggests that despite international sanctions, Russia has managed to secure crucial supplies from its trading partners, including Thailand.

U.S. Sanctions on Thai Companies
To curb the flow of strategic goods to Moscow, the U.S. government has imposed sanctions on several Thai companies involved in the trade of dual-use goods—components that can be used for both civilian and military purposes.
These exports include products such as microchips, ball bearings, and various other electronic components, which are now under strict scrutiny due to their potential to support Russia’s military operations. These sanctions are part of a broader U.S. policy to restrict Russia’s access to technology and materials that could strengthen its defense sector.

Thailand’s Response and the Impact of Sanctions
So far, most Thai companies facing sanctions have either declined to comment or have been unavailable for clarification. Despite repeated calls to take a stance, the Thai government has yet to issue a clear response to pressure from Washington.
Thai authorities have not taken any concrete action to address these sanctions, further reinforcing the perception that the country is reluctant to take a firm position in the evolving geopolitical conflict.

Thailand’s Stance on Russia and Potential Western Pressure
Amid growing pressure from the U.S. and its allies, Thailand appears to be maintaining its close ties with Russia. In 2023, the then-Prime Minister of Thailand openly emphasized the importance of economic cooperation with Moscow, stressing that trade relations between the two countries remained strong despite various Western restrictions.
The current administration seems to be continuing this approach, showing no signs of shifting its neutral stance on the Russia- Ukraine conflict. This position may put Thailand under increased scrutiny from Western nations, especially if the export of sensitive goods to Russia continues.
