Traveling to Russia for the first time as an Indonesian passport holder was both exciting and eye-opening. From preparation to exploration, my 5 days and 4 nights in Moscow turned out to be one of the most memorable travel experiences I’ve had. Here’s a detailed reflection of my journey.
Visa: Simple and Accessible Options for Indonesian Travelers
For Indonesians, obtaining a Russian visa is relatively straightforward and not as complicated as one might initially expect. Travelers can choose between applying for a Russian e-Visa online, which is convenient and quick, or applying for a traditional sticker visa through the Russian Embassy in Jakarta. The requirements are clearly outlined, and the process is efficient, making it accessible even for first-time travelers. Overall, I found the visa process to be smooth, transparent, and manageable without unnecessary complications.
Currency: Planning Ahead for Exchange Convenience
One practical challenge I encountered was related to currency. It is quite difficult to find money changers in Jakarta that provide Russian Rubles, so I decided to bring Euros and US dollars instead. This turned out to be a good decision, as I was able to easily exchange them at a money changer upon arrival at Moscow airport. The process was straightforward and convenient, although it’s always advisable to carry some widely accepted currencies when traveling to destinations with less accessible local currency exchange options.
Flight: Long but Comfortable Journey via Shanghai
For my journey, I flew with China Eastern Airlines, taking a route from Jakarta to Shanghai (approximately 6 hours), followed by a connecting flight from Shanghai to Moscow (around 10 hours). While the journey was long, the transit was smooth and well-organized, making the overall experience comfortable. Alternatively, travelers can also consider flying with Middle Eastern airlines, which offer competitive routes and excellent service options to Moscow.
The City of Moscow: A Vast and Historic European Capital
Moscow is an incredibly impressive city in both scale and history. With a population of over 13 million people, it is the largest capital city in Europe. Founded in 1147, the city has a rich history spanning more than 870 years. Covering an area of approximately 2,511 square kilometers, Moscow combines historical grandeur with modern development, offering a unique blend of old and new.
Shopping and Malls: Grand, Modern, and Diverse
The malls in Moscow are truly extravagant and grand. Many feature modern architectural designs and house a wide range of both international luxury brands and local retailers. Shopping centers are not just places to shop but also serve as lifestyle hubs with dining, entertainment, and leisure options comparable to those in other major global cities.
Moscow Metro: Efficient Transport with Artistic Heritage
The Moscow Metro is one of the most impressive transportation systems I’ve experienced. It is vast, efficient, and well-connected. Many stations are historic and beautifully designed, featuring classical architecture, chandeliers, and artistic elements. Despite their age, the trains themselves are modern, clean, and reliable, making daily travel both efficient and enjoyable.
People: Warm, Helpful, and Surprisingly Friendly
One of the most pleasant surprises of my trip was the friendliness of the people. I felt comfortable approaching strangers to ask for directions or help with taking photos, and they were always willing to assist. One memorable experience was when a kind lady helped me purchase a one-day metro pass using her local bank card, allowing me to pay her in cash. This gesture left a strong positive impression.
Food: Plenty of Halal Options Available
For Muslim travelers, Moscow offers plenty of halal food options. There are numerous halal restaurants and eateries across the city. Islam is one of the fastest-growing religions in Russia, and the increasing Muslim population has contributed to the availability of halal cuisine, making it easy to find suitable food.
Places of Interest: Modern Museums with Rich Stories
Moscow offers a wide range of attractions, particularly its museums. I visited the Museum of Cosmonautics, which showcases Russia’s achievements in space exploration. The museum is modern, well-maintained, and filled with fascinating exhibits that provide deep insights into the country’s scientific accomplishments.
Safety: A Secure Environment for Solo Travelers
Throughout my stay, I felt safe exploring Moscow, even when traveling alone late at night. The presence of police patrols in many parts of the city contributes to a strong sense of security. This made it comfortable to explore different areas without concern.
Weather: Windy Conditions and Adjustment Challenges
The weather in Moscow felt quite different from other European cities I have visited. It was noticeably windy, and my body needed time to adjust to the local climate. This adjustment period may have contributed to me feeling slightly unwell during my stay.
Accommodation: Strategic Location and Comfortable Stay
My hotel was strategically located near the Moscow River, close to both a train station and a metro station, as well as a large shopping center. This made it very convenient to move around the city. The breakfast offered a mix of Russian and Western dishes, which I found enjoyable and well-suited to my preferences.
City Planning: A Balance of History and Modernity
Moscow’s city planning is highly impressive. The city is expansive yet well-organized, blending historical architectural styles with modern developments. This contrast is especially visible in the Moscow City district, where contemporary skyscrapers stand alongside historic landmarks.
Public Transportation: Seamless and Integrated Systems
In addition to the metro, Moscow has buses and trams that are well integrated into the public transportation network. A single one-day pass can be used across different modes of transport, making it easy and efficient to navigate the city.
Moscow River Cruise: A Unique Cultural Experience
One of the highlights of my trip was the Moscow River cruise, which lasted about two hours. The experience included a full dinner and live Russian cultural performances on board, offering a unique and memorable way to enjoy the city’s scenery.
Friday Prayer Experience: A Meaningful Spiritual Moment
Attending Friday prayers at the Moscow Cathedral Mosque was a deeply meaningful experience. The mosque was filled with worshippers from diverse backgrounds, reflecting the city’s multicultural nature. Security was well managed, with police presence ensuring safety for all attendees.
Final Reflections: A Memorable and Enriching Journey
Overall, this trip was one of the best travel experiences I’ve had. My 5 days and 4 nights in Moscow felt too short, and I wish I had more time to explore further. Thanks to the city’s modern and seamless public transportation system, I was able to visit around 9 to 10 different sites in a single day. Moscow exceeded my expectations in many ways—from its infrastructure and culture to the kindness of its people—and it is definitely a destination I would love to visit again.
