Did you know that the Sagrada Família in Barcelona is now officially the tallest church in the world? This masterpiece by Antoni Gaudí is even recognized by Guinness World Records as the tallest church on the planet.
The building reached its definitive maximum height of 172.5 meters (566 feet) on February 20, 2026, when workers finished the exterior of the central Tower of Jesus Christ. Following this major milestone, the church held its official inauguration on June 10, 2026.
This special date marked exactly 100 years since Gaudí passed away. Moreover, Pope Leo XIV even visited the basilica to bless the completed tower.
The Unique Interior Design
Gaudí based the entire inside of the church on nature, completely ignoring traditional architecture rules. He replaced heavy Gothic exterior walls with 36 branching stone pillars that look like massive tree trunks.
These columns use a unique "double twist" geometry, starting as stars at the base and twisting into perfect circles at the top. Gaudí used extra-strong materials like red porphyry and dark basalt to help these pillars support the massive roof.
The stained-glass windows follow the daily path of the sun to constantly shift the mood inside. The East side catches the morning light with cool blues and greens, while the West side catches the sunset with fiery oranges and reds.
Unlike older cathedrals, Gaudí placed the brightest colors at the bottom so people could read the names of saints.
Moreover, the outside of the basilica features a massive cluster of 18 towers. Every single one holds a specific meaning:
- 12 towers represent the Apostles.
- 4 towers stand for the Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), decorated with traditional symbols like the lion, ox, eagle, and winged man.
- 1 tower honors the Virgin Mary. Finished in 2021, it shines bright with a giant, 12-pointed star on top.
- The central tower belongs to Jesus Christ. It is the tallest of the bunch and features a massive 17-meter cross at the top.
The “Forever Project”
Construction started on March 19, 1882, using basic hammers, hand chisels, and wooden scaffolding. The project relied entirely on private donations, so progress crawled along for decades.
This slow pace led people to call it the "forever project." Gaudí never minded the timeline, joking that his "client", which translated into “God”, was not in a rush.
The process finally sped up in the 21st century. Architects now use 3D computer software and automated stone-cutting machines to replicate Gaudí’s complex shapes. The final spires even use special stone panels reinforced with hidden steel bars to withstand strong city winds.
Today, this record-breaking building is one of the most famous landmarks on Earth. UNESCO officially recognized its unique cultural value by naming the Nativity Facade and the Crypt as a World Heritage Site. This prestigious title ensures the protection of Gaudí's brilliant designs for future generations.
In 2025, the Sagrada Família welcomed approximately 4.8 to 5 million visitors, averaging around 15,000 tourists a day. This massive turnout made the iconic Barcelona basilica one of the most visited monuments in Europe.
