Many people wonder why they seem to be a favorite target for mosquitoes while others nearby remain untouched. It turns out that your blood type might be the real reason for this frustration.
Scientists have spent years looking into why these insects prefer certain individuals over others. According to experts, the belief that mosquitoes love blood type O is not just a myth.
Prof. Upik Kesumawati from the School of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences (SKHB) at IPB University explains that this unique phenomenon actually has a scientific basis. However, it does not mean that people with other blood types are immune to mosquito bites.
Why Blood Type O Is a Favorite Target
The attraction starts with the chemical signals our bodies naturally release. In fact, mosquitoes land on people with blood type O nearly twice as often as those with blood type A. In controlled environments, these insects also consistently choose feeders filled with type O blood over any other type.
The reason for this choice is closely linked to the chemical compounds produced by the body. People with blood type O tend to release higher levels of lactic acid and carbon dioxide. These compounds act as clear signals that mosquitoes use to find their next meal.
“People with blood type O have higher levels of volatile compounds compared to those with blood type A. For example, they produce more lactic acid or carbon dioxide (CO2), making them easier for mosquitoes to detect,” Prof. Upik said.
Furthermore, about 80% of humans are "secretors." This means they release chemical signals through their skin that reveal their exact blood type. Mosquitoes can sense these signals before they even land on a person.
Specifically, they are drawn to a compound called the H-antigen, which is found in the skin of individuals with type O blood. While researchers are still studying the exact process, it shows that blood type O individuals provide a distinct scent profile. This makes them much easier for a mosquito to track and identify from a distance.
Other Factors That Attract Mosquitoes
Blood type is a major factor, but it is not the only thing that makes someone a target. Mosquitoes use a variety of sensors to find humans. They are highly attracted to the carbon dioxide humans exhale, which helps them find hosts from far away.
Physical heat and body odor also play massive roles. For example, people who have just exercised or those who have been drinking alcohol may find themselves being bitten more often.
Moreover, the color of clothes also matters. Darker colors, like black or dark blue, tend to absorb heat and make the body warmer.
Someone wearing dark clothing becomes an easy target to spot because mosquitoes prefer warm conditions. Genetics and the specific types of bacteria living on the skin also contribute to how attractive humans seem to these insects.
However, it is a common mistake to think that all mosquitoes look for human blood. In reality, male mosquitoes do not bite humans, because they get all their energy from plant sap and flower nectar.
Only female mosquitoes suck blood, and they do it for a very specific reproductive purpose. They need the rich proteins and nutrients found in blood to help their eggs mature properly. Without this blood meal, they cannot reproduce.
