The Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mosque is a very famous building located in Cotabato City. Most people call it the Grand Mosque of Cotabato because of its huge size and beautiful design. It sits in Barangay Kalanganan II, right at the edge of the Tamontaka River.
According to the House of Representatives of the Republic of the Philippines, this mosque is the largest place of worship for Muslims in the Philippines. It is so big that it can hold about 15,000 people at one time. Because it is so important, it has become a central landmark for the entire Bangsamoro region.
Visitors come from all over to see the 14 bright golden domes that shine in the sun. Four tall towers, called minarets, stand about 40 to 43 meters high around the main building. These towers even have special lights on top to help planes avoid hitting them at night.
The mosque was built on five hectares of land that was kindly donated by the Dilangalen family. Its location is very special because people arriving by boat or plane can see it from far away. It stands as a symbol of pride, faith, and peace for the people living in Mindanao.
The History and Funding of the Mosque
The story of this mosque is a great example of the close friendship between the Philippines and Brunei. A very large portion of the money used to build it was provided by Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei. He gave the funds as a generous gift to help the Muslim community have a grand place for their prayers.
The total cost to build this massive structure was reported to be around US$48 million. This project was part of a special bilateral agreement to promote peace and development in the region.
Construction for the mosque was finished in 2011 after several years of hard work. It was designed by a world-renowned architect named Felino Palafox, Jr. He wanted the building to look like the grand mosques found in places like Turkey and Dubai.
He combined these Middle Eastern styles with local Filipino Muslim motifs to create something truly unique. Today, the mosque is managed by the Bangsamoro government to ensure it remains a well-maintained and safe space for the public.
Amazing Design and Architecture
The design of the mosque is meant to feel both strong and elegant at the same time. The white walls of the base create a perfect balance with the bright gold-painted domes.
Inside, the mosque has two large courtyards on each side that let in a lot of natural sunlight. There is also a special water fountain in the middle of a rotunda where people can enjoy the quiet atmosphere. The building is very tall, with a height equivalent to a 15-story house.
The mosque went through a large renovation to make it even better for the community. This rehabilitation project was finished in July 2025 by the Ministry of Public Works.
Workers fixed the roof to stop water leaks and gave the whole building a fresh coat of paint. They also installed new air-conditioning units so that worshippers can stay cool during their daily prayers. A new security fence and an office building were also added to the site during this time.
Even though it is a religious site, non-Muslims are welcome to visit as long as they follow the dress code. It remains a shining beacon of unity and cultural pride for everyone in the country.
