Magnolia champaca is the scientific name for the champaca tree, which features fragrant orange or yellow flowers. It belongs to the Magnoliaceae family. In earlier botanical terminology, the tree was frequently referred to as Michelia champaca.
The champaca tree originates broadly across South Asia and Southeast Asia. Its natural distribution spans numerous countries with tropical and subtropical climates, including India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, and Sabah in Malaysia. In Indonesia, the tree can be found across various regions such as Java, Kalimantan, and the Lesser Sunda Islands.
Anatomy of the Champaca Canopy
The champaca tree thrives in mountain forest regions or lowlands, at elevations ranging from 200 to 1,600 meters above sea level.
As a medium to large canopy tree, it can live as an evergreen plant throughout the year. In its natural habitat, the tree can reach heights of up to fifty meters with a trunk diameter of up to two hundred centimeters.
The trunk features heartwood ranging in color from bright yellow to olive-brown, possessing a straight grain structure with a medium and smooth texture.
The surface of the tree's wood is smooth and appears glossy. The robust physical trunk characteristics then transition naturally upward. Meanwhile, the crown is supported by oblong leaves with a smooth surface and tapered tips, measuring 10 to 25 centimeters in length and 4 to 10 centimeters in width.
Secrets Behind the Fragrance of Champaca Flower
As it grows, the champaca produces certain floral buds during its blooming season with diverse colors, ranging from bright yellow and golden orange to clean white.
Based on a 2017 study from the National Library of Medicine, champaca flowers are known to emit volatile organic compounds when fully in bloom.
The characteristic fragrance of champaca is dominated by terpenoid and volatile ester contents. More specifically, the floral aroma originates from the ester component methyl 2-methylbutanoate and the compound (R)-linalool along with its derivatives.
Because of its strong fragrance, the champaca flower is utilized in the fragrance industry to be processed into raw perfume ingredients.
Aside from its flowers, the trunk of the champaca tree also serves many supportive functions. Because it possesses strong wood that is easily polished, the champaca trunk can be utilized to make door and window frames. Additionally, champaca wood is used to craft various household furnishings such as tables and chairs, and is functionally employed as a building material.
Cultural Significance in Southeast Asia
The presence of the champaca flower is also closely intertwined with the lives of communities across Southeast Asian countries.
In Thailand, the flower is known by the name Champi and is frequently planted around Buddhist temple areas. Thai people commonly use its flowers for daily prayer rituals, offerings, and expressions of reverence.
In Indonesia, the champaca flower forms a part of cultural identity, one example being in Aceh. The people of Aceh recognize the flower by the local name Jeumpa. The name of the flower is immortalized through a regional song titled "Bungo Jeumpa" to depict the form and beauty of the champaca flower.
