The United States has the world’s largest military budget by a wide margin, with spending that far exceeds that of other major military powers.
For 2025, the U.S. Congress authorized $895.2 billion for national defense, covering the Department of Defense and other national security programs.
China’s approved defense budget was about $249 billion, while Russia allocated around $145 billion for national defense.
Put together, China and Russia planned to spend roughly $394 billion. That means the U.S. authorization was about 2.3 times larger than the two countries’ combined budgets.
A Military Built to Project Power
The $895.2 billion figure is not just money for weapons.
According to the U.S. Department of Defense, the defense budget also covers military personnel, operations and maintenance, research and development, procurement, and the infrastructure needed to keep forces ready and operating around the world.
For FY2025, the Pentagon budget included funding for aircraft, ships and submarines, combat equipment, missiles, missile defense, advanced research, cybersecurity and the modernization of the U.S. nuclear triad.
A major part of that spending supports the United States’ ability to project military power far beyond its own territory.
Known as power projection, this means having the forces, equipment and infrastructure needed to deploy and sustain military operations over long distances and across different regions.
That capability requires more than maintaining troops. The United States has to operate aircraft carriers and overseas bases, maintain strategic airlift and long range weapons, and keep the logistics network needed to move and supply forces around the world.
The budget reflects a military built for more than homeland defense. The United States also needs to maintain the ability to deploy and operate forces far beyond its own borders.
About 16 Times Southeast Asia’s Combined Spending
The gap becomes even more striking when the U.S. figure is compared with Southeast Asia.
Using 2025 defense allocations and the best available country level budget figures, Southeast Asia’s combined defense spending comes to roughly $56-58 billion.
The calculation covers the region’s 11 countries, although some figures are estimates because Vietnam and Myanmar do not publish fully comparable defense budget breakdowns.
That means the U.S. national defense figure of $895.2 billion was roughly 16 times larger than Southeast Asia’s combined defense budget.
The difference is even more notable given that Southeast Asia has a population of more than 680 million, with several countries also raising defense spending to modernize their militaries.
Indonesia, Singapore, Vietnam and the Philippines are among the region’s larger defense spenders. It is worth noting that this is a comparison of national defense budgets, not SIPRI’s estimates of actual military expenditure.
Because several Southeast Asian governments do not publish directly comparable figures, the regional total should be treated as an approximate figure.
Nearly Four Times Indonesia’s Entire State Budget
There is another way to put the number into perspective.
Indonesia has Southeast Asia’s largest government budget in nominal terms, with its 2025 state budget set at Rp3,621.3 trillion, according to the Indonesia Ministry of Finance. The budget covers everything from education and healthcare to infrastructure, social protection and government operations.
At the exchange rate around the time the budget was approved, that was roughly $237 billion.
The U.S. 2025 national defense authorization of $895.2 billion was therefore almost four times Indonesia’s entire annual state budget.
Remember, this is not a comparison between two defense budgets. The Indonesian figure covers the country’s entire government spending, while the U.S. figure is specifically for national defense.
Why Is the U.S. Figure So Large?
The answer is geography and the scale of America’s global military role.
The United States maintains forces and military facilities across the world, operates one of the largest air forces and navies ever built, maintains a nuclear triad, funds advanced weapons research and supports a large network of military allies.
It also spends heavily on maintaining and replacing equipment that is vastly more expensive than most conventional military hardware.
The United States is funding a military designed to operate on a global scale, its budget shows just how expensive that role can be.
