Southeast Asia has two men’s national-team football tournaments in 2026. One has been played for 30 years. The other is making its debut this year.

The first is the ASEAN Championship, organized by the ASEAN Football Federation (AFF). Its 2026 edition ran from July 24 to August 26 and ended with Vietnam beating Thailand 4–2 on aggregate.

The second is the FIFA ASEAN Cup, a new tournament organized by FIFA. Its inaugural edition runs from September 24 to October 5.

Both tournaments bring together national teams from Southeast Asia. But they are separate competitions, with different organizers, formats, and positions within FIFA’s international calendar.

One Tournament Is 30 Years Old, the Other Is Just Beginning

The ASEAN Championship began in 1996 as the Tiger Cup, with Singapore hosting the inaugural edition, which featured 10 Southeast Asian national teams.

The tournament has changed names several times as its sponsors changed. It became the AFF Championship in 2007, the AFF Suzuki Cup from 2008 to 2020, and the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup in 2022. In 2024, AFF renamed it the ASEAN Championship and introduced a new logo called the Unity Weave.

The 2026 edition was the tournament’s 16th. Vietnam went on to win the title after defeating Thailand over two legs, securing its fourth championship.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup, meanwhile, has a much shorter history. FIFA and ASEAN announced the tournament in October 2025, when FIFA President Gianni Infantino and ASEAN Secretary-General Kao Kim Hourn signed a memorandum of understanding at the 47th ASEAN Summit in Kuala Lumpur.

FIFA described the new competition as a regional tournament bringing together Southeast Asian national teams, with a format partly modeled on the FIFA Arab Cup.

The Biggest Difference Is the FIFA Calendar

The most important difference between the two tournaments is not what happens on the pitch, but when the games are played.

The ASEAN Championship is usually held around the end or beginning of the year. It falls outside FIFA’s international calendar, the periods when clubs are required to release players for national-team duty.

That means a national team may want to call up a player who plays for a club, but the club is not necessarily required to release him for the ASEAN Championship.

For the 2026 edition, AFF moved the tournament to July and August as more domestic leagues in Southeast Asia adopted an August-to-May season. The change was intended to make it easier for national teams to field their preferred players, although the tournament remained outside FIFA’s international calendar.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup follows a different schedule. It runs from September 24 to October 5, within the September-October window of FIFA’s international calendar.

For national teams, that difference matters. The calendar determines not only when a tournament is played, but also which players can be available to represent their countries.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup Has a Larger Format

The 2026 ASEAN Championship featured 10 teams divided into two groups. The top two teams from each group advanced to the semifinals, with both the semifinals and final played over two legs.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup has 14 teams. All 11 ASEAN members are taking part, joined by Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Hong Kong, China.

FIFA divides the tournament into two divisions. Division 1 is hosted by Indonesia and features Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. Division 2 is held in Hong Kong, China, with Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Timor-Leste.

Each division is split into two groups. Teams play each opponent once, and the group winners advance to their respective division finals.

Why Are There Two Tournaments in the Same Region?

The arrival of the FIFA ASEAN Cup has also raised questions about FIFA’s relationship with the football organizations that already govern the region. AFF oversees football in Southeast Asia, including the ASEAN Championship, while the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) governs football at the continental level.

According to Inside World Football, AFF and AFC were not informed before FIFA announced the new tournament in October 2025. FIFA’s Council approved the competition in March 2026, and FIFA and AFF subsequently reached a memorandum of understanding in April.

The situation is notable because an earlier memorandum of understanding between FIFA and ASEAN, signed in October 2025, said FIFA would involve relevant stakeholders, including AFC, AFF, and member associations, in the competition.

The FIFA ASEAN Cup has ultimately gone ahead as a new tournament separate from the ASEAN Championship, even though both are being played within the same region.
