The United States emerged as the most generous nation, with an average tipping rate of 20%. Tipping is deeply ingrained in American culture, especially in the service industry, where it often constitutes a significant portion of workers' earnings. Following closely is China, where the average tip reaches 18%, reflecting a growing trend of tipping in urban areas, especially in international-style restaurants and high-end establishments.

These high tipping rates underline the importance of service appreciation in these countries, contrasting with regions where tipping is less common or occurs at lower rates.

Tipping Practices in Southeast Asia

Southeast Asia presents a diverse range of tipping customs influenced by cultural norms and economic factors. Indonesia ranked 16th globally, with tipping rates ranging between 10% and 20%. In restaurants, a service charge is often included, but additional tips are welcomed as a gesture of appreciation.

Thailand followed at 29th, with tipping rates between 10% and 18%. While tipping is not obligatory, it is increasingly common in tourist areas and upscale establishments. Singapore, ranked 33rd, has similar practices, though tipping is less customary due to the inclusion of a service charge in most bills. These rankings reflect the region’s evolving hospitality practices, influenced by growing international tourism.
