Myanmar has become the country with the highest rate of modern slavery in Southeast Asia!
Based on data from Walk Free titled the Global Slavery Index 2023, measuring the scale of modern slavery in 160 countries. National estimates regarding prevalence per thousand people and the number of individuals are calculated using factors of modern slavery risk at both individual and national levels. Countries estimated to have the highest prevalence of modern slavery tend to be affected by conflicts, enforce state-imposed forced labor, and have weak governance.
This analysis is based on thousands of interviews with modern slavery survivors collected through nationally representative household surveys in 75 countries and Walk Free’s assessments of national-level vulnerability.
