A new study warns that by 2050, nearly 60% of adults and a third of all children worldwide will be overweight or obese if no action is taken.
Researchers highlight that unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles have fueled this growing crisis, with the number of overweight people skyrocketing from 929 million in 1990 to 2.6 billion in 2021.
The study predicts that the world's healthcare systems will face overwhelming pressure, especially as a quarter of the obese population will be over 65 years old by mid-century.
However, experts emphasize that it’s not too late to turn things around, calling for stronger political commitment to promoting healthier diets, physical activity, and better living environments.
