Malaysia's AirAsia is in advanced discussions to place an order for at least 100 Airbus jets at the Paris Airshow, marking a significant strategic shift for the low-cost carrier.

The deal will likely introduce Airbus's smallest jet, the A220, to AirAsia's fleet for the first time, representing a departure from the airline's traditional reliance on larger narrow-body aircraft.

The Malaysia-based low-cost carrier operates one of Asia's largest fleets, having grown from two aircraft and 200 staff in 2001 to more than 200 aircraft and 21,000 staff across multiple countries under founder Tony Fernandes' leadership.

The potential announcement at the Paris Airshow could reshape AirAsia's regional fleet strategy, as the A220 is designed for shorter regional routes and offers improved fuel efficiency compared to larger jets.
