Indonesia ranks first in cat ownership across Southeast Asia, with nearly half (47%) of Indonesian households keeping cats as pets, according to a Rakuten Insight Global survey conducted in January 2021. The figure surpasses neighboring countries, with the Philippines at 43% and Thailand at 42%.
The survey covered 97,000 respondents from 12 countries across Asia, including China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Vietnam, all surveyed through Rakuten Insight's dedicated online panel. Indonesia clearly stood out as the region's most devoted cat-keeping nation.
One key reason cats are the top choice in Indonesia is how well they fit modern urban lifestyles. They are relatively independent, require no large living space, and can be left at home for extended periods, making them ideal companions for busy city dwellers living in apartments or smaller homes.
Beyond practicality, cats offer significant emotional benefits. Many owners report that interacting with their pets reduces stress and anxiety, with physical contact shown to boost oxytocin levels, the hormone linked to feelings of happiness and relaxation.
Cats also hold a special place in Indonesian culture, often seen as symbols of good fortune. The trend even extends to national figures: President Prabowo's cat, Bobby Kertanegara, went viral after appearing in videos at the State Palace and now has over 500,000 Instagram followers. Indonesia's love for cats is clearly more than just a trend — it's a way of life.
