On April 4, 2025, Cambodia announced an immediate reduction in import tariffs from 35% to 5% on 19 product categories from the United States, in a show of goodwill and a desire to strengthen trade ties.
This move came in response to the U.S. government’s recent decision to impose a steep 49% tariff on Cambodian goods starting April 9, prompting Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet to request a postponement and initiate negotiations with President Donald Trump.
Cambodia’s Minister of Commerce, Cham Nimul, also urged the U.S. Trade Representative to delay the tariff enforcement and establish a negotiation mechanism that allows time for dialogue and stakeholder consultations.
Cambodia emphasized its longstanding and mutually beneficial relationship with the United States, stressing that many of its exports complement U.S. industries and that both countries would benefit from continued cooperation and fair trade practices.
