China has announced its readiness to "take the lead" in signing the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone Treaty, with Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning affirming Beijing's firm support for establishing a nuclear-free zone in the region during a July 3 press conference.

Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan reported that both China and Russia have agreed to become signatories to the SEANWFZ treaty, while the United States is currently reviewing the treaty before making a decision on signing.

Mao Ning emphasized that as ASEAN's comprehensive strategic partner and friendly neighbor, China has consistently supported the establishment of the Southeast Asia Nuclear Weapon-Free Zone and remains ready to maintain communication with ASEAN countries on this matter.

If signed, China and Russia would become the first nuclear-armed states to formally commit to the treaty that prohibits the use of nuclear weapons in Southeast Asia.

However, Philippine Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. has questioned China's credibility in leading the nuclear-free zone initiative, casting doubt on Beijing's sincerity given its regional military activities.
