Human internet traffic has shrunk to just 38.5 percent of total web activity, with the remaining 61.5 percent now dominated by automated programs including bots, hacking tools, and other non-human sources, according to a security report from Barracuda Networks.
The cybersecurity firm's analysis reveals that malicious bots account for 39 percent of all internet traffic, while beneficial bots such as search engine crawlers and social network bots represent only 25 percent of automated activity, leaving human users as a minority presence online.
Nitzan Miron, VP of Product Management for Application Security at Barracuda, warned that over 60 percent of bots are designed to carry out harmful activities at scale, including data theft, performance degradation, and security breaches when left undetected and unblocked.
Geographic data shows North America leads bad bot traffic sources at 67 percent, followed by Europe at 22 percent and Asia at 7.5 percent, highlighting the global distribution of automated malicious activity across the internet infrastructure.
Research from Professor Simon Hegelich in Munich corroborates these findings, noting that sophisticated bots can generate thousands of daily posts and messages while mimicking human behavior so convincingly that ordinary users cannot distinguish between automated accounts and genuine people, raising concerns about the authenticity of online interactions and the integrity of digital spaces.
