Indonesia's government clarified that the recent trade agreement with the United States will only allow transfer of commercial data, not citizens' personal information, following public concerns about data sovereignty.

The Ministry of Communication and Digital emphasized that the deal establishes a legitimate, secure, and measurable legal foundation for managing commercial data transfers rather than unrestricted access to personal data.

The Presidential Communication Office confirmed that personal data transfer arrangements will be strictly limited to select commodity and service exchanges for commercial purposes as part of the broader trade framework.

Public Policy Advisor Bhredipta Socarana from Access Partnership noted that the US government is seeking certainty regarding free flow of commercial data from Indonesia, requiring immediate finalization of derivative regulations.

This clarification comes as part of President Trump's landmark reciprocal trade agreement with Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, which includes tariff reductions to 19% and commercial deals worth billions in aircraft and energy purchases.
