Indonesia may not top ASEAN in electric vehicle (EV) sales growth, but it leads the region in consumer satisfaction, with 99% of Indonesian EV owners saying they are satisfied—the highest rate in Southeast Asia according to PwC’s ASEAN-6 eReadiness 2025 report, ahead of Malaysia (96%) and the Philippines (93%).

PwC notes that this near-universal satisfaction is a strategic advantage, as happy owners often become advocates who help accelerate adoption, creating momentum for policymakers and manufacturers to expand EV options and strengthen supporting infrastructure.

Indonesian users cite faster charging, lower operating costs, and improved battery lifespan as key benefits, yet challenges persist as about one-third of EV owners are considering switching back to combustion engines due to higher-than-expected maintenance costs, underwhelming driving experiences, limited range, and low confidence in used EVs—reflected in only 47% willing to buy a used model compared to the ASEAN average of 59%.

Meanwhile, regional peers are rapidly advancing, with Viet Nam posting 84% EV growth, Thailand achieving 45%, and Singapore recording 25% backed by world-class charging infrastructure, while Indonesia’s eReadiness score stands at 2.8/5, with incentives rated the highest in ASEAN at 4.0 but infrastructure lagging at 1.4, far behind Singapore’s 4.3.

PwC’s Lukmanul Arsyad stresses that Indonesia has “a big opportunity to attract investment and accelerate the EV transition,” and turning strong consumer satisfaction into regional leadership will depend on narrowing infrastructure gaps, reducing maintenance burdens, and strengthening the national EV supply chain.
